The Nationals have officially locked up one player before the deadline to sign 2010 draft picks, agreeing to terms with left-hander Robbie Ray, their 12th-round pick in the June First-Year Player Draft.
Ray, who had a full scholarship to the University of Arkansas, signed for $799,000. He would have gone higher in the draft had he not been seen as a risk to go to school.
The Nationals brought Ray and his family to Nationals Park last weekend to “show him our campus,” general manager Mike Rizzo said.
The Brentwood, Tenn., native throws between 90 and 92 mph, has a good changeup and pitched three perfect games in high school this year.
On Saturday, Rizzo said the Nationals “see his ability as being great ability - a left-handed pitcher that our scouts and our scouting director just loved.”
