The Nationals received $1.1 million from the Texas Rangers in the deal that sent Cristian Guzman there, according to a source with knowledge of the deal. The Nationals will pay the remainder of Guzman’s contract, which was for $8 million this season.
The Nationals got Double-A pitchers Ryan Tatusko and Tanner Roark from the Rangers in exchange for Guzman. Without the Rangers including a second pitcher in the deal, the source said, Nationals GM Mike Rizzo would not have been willing to take on part of Guzman’s salary.
Playing in Anaheim with his new team, Guzman told reporters therehe originally vetoed the deal to the Rangers, because he would have had to move his kids to Texas, but changed his mind.
