VIERA, Fla. - Tom Gorzelanny’s day is done. The lefty worked five innings before turning the game over to right-hander Todd Coffey in the sixth with the Nationals trailing 2-0.
Gorzelanny allowed two runs on four hits, walked two and struck out three. He threw 84 pitches, 47 of them strikes.
After three Grapefruit League starts, Gorzelanny has a 3.97 ERA. That mark isn’t really spectacular, but will help separate the ex-Cub from guys like Yunesky Maya and Ross Detwiler.
Coffey, who had a 7.71 ERA in six spring outings, just retired the Tigers in order, striking out a pair. After two terrible efforts, Coffey’s clean inning is an encouraging sign.
