Marquis working quick, looking strong early

VIERA, Fla. - Entering today’s game against the Tigers, Jason Marquis had thrown just 70 pitches in seven innings this spring. He’s essentially continued on that pace today.

Marquis gave up a run - his first of the spring - in the third inning, but has mostly turned in the same kind of work he has all spring, getting early-count groundouts with his sinker. He’s thrown 34 pitches, 23 of them strikes, in three innings, and the Nationals trail 1-0.

The right-hander is scheduled to go five innings today, and at the pace he’s working, he might have to get extra work in the bullpen again.

Washington has three hits so far on Rick Porcello, including two from Ian Desmond. The other one is from Michael Morse, who’s now batting .517 for the spring.
