Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond, who went on paternity leave today under Major League Baseball’s new rule, became a father this afternoon. His wife Chelsey gave birth to a baby boy, Grayson Wesley Desmond, at 3:56 p.m. in Sarasota, Fla. He is six pounds, 11 ounces.
A Nationals spokesman said both mother and baby are doing well.
Manager Jim Riggleman said Desmond will likely return to the team on Thursday.
