Update: The Nationals have defeated the Cardinals 8-6. Drew Storen got the save for Washington.
The Nationals and Cardinals are in the eighth inning, and with Washington’s lead being cut to 8-6, manager Jim Riggleman has switched his late-inning progression.
He’s got Sean Burnett pitching the eighth inning, and Drew Storen is up in the bullpen for the ninth. Burnett will face the top of the Cardinals’ order, and would presumably get Albert Pujols if St. Louis rallies (he is due up fourth in the inning).
Assuming Burnett only pitches an inning, Storen would be in line for the save. But this is really the first time we’ve seen Riggleman do what he alluded to in spring training - bringing Burnett (who’s pitched in most of the save situations) in for the eighth inning. Riggleman discussed this spring how sometimes, he’ll need to use his best reliever in the seventh or eighth inning, and with the Cardinals’ top hitters due up in the eighth, he’s countering with Burnett here. We’ll see how it goes.
