Missed chances doom Nationals in 2-1 loss to Orioles

BALTIMORE - From the first at-bat of today’s game against the Orioles, when Roger Bernadina was called out for bunting the ball out of the batter’s box, the Nationals have been watching chances to score slip away from them. They got eight hits, but only scored one run. And Jordan Zimmermann’s one mistake was enough to cost him.

The Nationals lost 2-1 to the Orioles on Sunday afternoon at Camden Yards, dropping an interleague series it felt like they should have won. After scoring 17 runs on Friday, the Nationals managed just five the rest of the weekend. On Sunday, they went 1-for-8 with men in scoring position, leaving nine runners on base.

Vladimir Guerrero’s two-run homer off Zimmermann in the seventh gave the Orioles their only runs. The game ended with a called strikeout on Bernadina, followed by Matt Wieters throwing out Brian Bixler trying to steal second base.
