On rainy night, Nationals miss early chances against Mets

It’s pouring at Citi Field. The Mets took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. And the Nationals have stranded runners at third in each of the first two innings.

All those things are connected, because with the weather threatening to play a significant role in tonight’s game, the opportunities the Nationals squandered could loom large.

They got a pair of two-out singles from Jayson Werth and Wilson Ramos in the first, but Adam LaRoche - who entered the night hitting .182 - flew out to right. And their missed chance in the second inning was worse; Michael Morse ripped a long double to start the inning, and got to third with one out. But Jerry Hairston Jr. popped up to second, and Tom Gorzelanny was thrown out on a close play at first.

So the Nationals trail 1-0 heading into the third. We’ll see if they can make up for their early missed chances.
