Angels beat Nationals 11-5 in sloppy game

An early lead delivered by Ryan Zimmerman and Jayson Werth disappeared in the fifth after an Ian Desmond error. That was just the start of the Nationals’ defensive problems in their 11-5 loss to the Angels.

After a nice comeback in the sixth inning, fueled by a Laynce Nix home run and an error by Angels’ first baseman Mark Trumbo gave the Nationals a 5-3 lead, starter Jason Marquis gave up a home run almost immediately to Erick Aybar.

Aybar’s blast made the score 5-4, but the Angels weren’t done. Collin Balester walked Torii Hunter and Vernon Wells immediately made the reliever pay with a two-run shot to left field that gave the Angels the lead for good.

The game seemed to settle down a little bit until the eighth inning when the Angels increased their lead to 7-5 off of right-hander Todd Coffey.
