Harper helps Northern All-Stars to first-inning lead

SALISBURY, Md. - Bryce Harper drove in the first run of the Strike Out Hunger South Atlantic League All-Star Game, though the RBI wasn’t produced with a hit and it wasn’t a thing of beauty.

But a simple groundout was enough to break a scoreless first-inning tie.

Harper’s low Single-A Hagerstown teammate, Blake Kelso, got things started with a leadoff single off the glove of first baseman Miles Head. Delmarva’s Manny Machado followed with a seeing-eye single up the middle on a hit-and-run, moving Kelso to third. A passed ball advanced Machado to second before Harper golfed a 3-1 pitch to second base, scoring Kelso and giving the Northern Division a 1-0 lead. Lakewood’s Jim Murphy followed with a sacrifice fly to center, making it 2-0.
