Nationals back in extras after bullpen blows lead against Giants

SAN FRANCISCO - For the second straight day, the Nationals’ bullpen was working with a 4-1 lead in the eighth inning. And for the second straight day, we’re headed to extra innings.

Todd Coffey allowed two runs in one-third of an inning, and the Giants tied the game on a Nate Schierholtz single over Ian Desmond’s head in the eighth. Henry Rodriguez nearly allowed the game-winning run to the Giants in the ninth, but Desmond threw out Andres Torres at home, with Ivan Rodriguez blocking the plate and tagging Torres out for the second out of the inning.

The Nationals were in the same situation yesterday after Drew Storen blew a save, and at this point, odd as it may seem, their usually-solid bullpen is hurting them. We’ll see if they can rally for another win here.
