SAN DIEGO - Ryan Mattheus, a reliever the Nationals got from the Rockies in a trade for Joe Beimel at the 2009 trade deadline, looks like he’s headed to the majors. Triple-A Syracuse put out a press release a couple of minutes ago that Mattheus’ contract has been purchased by the Nationals.
The move means the Nationals will have to take a player off their 25-man roster later today, though it’s not known who that will be yet. They had 39 players on their 40-man roster, so they can add Mattheus there without a problem.
Mattheus had pitched 10 shutout innings at Triple-A Syracuse, striking out 10 batters while walking three.
More on this later today.
