Balester headed to Syracuse

Fear not, all you who were fretting that some team might snatch Collin Balester out of transactional limbo and smuggle him to another team: He’s cleared waivers and is eligible to play tonight for Triple-A Syracuse.

The Nationals designated Balester for assignment Tuesday, putting him on optional waivers because his major league debut had occurred more than three years ago. Because of that, the Nationals couldn’t just option Balester to the minors - or put him on optional assignment, like they normally would. They had to expose him to waivers for 48 hours before sending him to the minors.

But since optional waivers are revokable, 99 percent of players aren’t claimed off of them. So Balester is back in the minors, safe and sound.
