The Nationals finished a series win over the Reds on Thursday night, beating them 3-1 to take two out of three games. And they got more than a little help from the outfielder they acquired from Cincinnati last month.
Jonny Gomes drove in two runs with a sixth-inning double to put the Nationals up 3-0. An inning earlier, he saved a run with an impressive catch in left field, crashing into the wall to keep Joey Votto from a RBI double.
As a result, Jordan Zimmermann got a win in what’s likely to be his third-to-last start of the season. He pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings, and the Nationals’ bullpen only gave up one run in relief. Ryan Mattheus came out of the game with right shoulder tightness, but Tyler Clippard and Drew Storen each pitched scoreless innings to finish the win.
More from the clubhouse in a little bit.
