Nationals add four to 40-man roster, get Kimball back from Toronto

The Nationals added four minor leaguers to their 40-man roster today, protecting a quartet of players who would have otherwise been eligible for the Rule 5 draft in December.

As expected, they added catcher Derek Norris and first baseman/outfielder Tyler Moore to the 40-man roster, keeping two of their top power-hitting prospects away from other teams, and also added center field prospect Eury Perez and catcher Jhonatan Solano.

Additionally, the Nationals got reliever Cole Kimball back from the Blue Jays on waivers through a quirky set of circumstances. They tried to pass the injured right-hander through waivers so they could outright him to the minors and clear a space on their 40-man roster, but Toronto claimed him this week. The Blue Jays also tried to pass Kimball through waivers for the same reason - since the 60-day disabled list isn’t available in the offseason - but the Nationals snatched him back.

So Kimball is still on the 40-man roster for now, but the Nationals will obviously put him on the 60-day DL next spring as he recovers from shoulder surgery.
