The Nationals voided the option of right-hander Garrett Mock this morning, instead putting him on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 11 with a right cervical spine disc injury. Mock was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse after his only start of the season. He stayed with the team through Monday to throw a bullpen session in preparation for his next start, which would have been Wednesday for Syracuse.
But when Mock threw the bullpen session, he felt a twinge in his shoulder, general manager Mike Rizzo said.
"We sent him to D.C. to get it checked out," Rizzo said. "It turns out he had something in his upper back that was causing the shoulder. It's a disc thing that put pressure on the nerve. He thought it was his shoulder, but it was actually (radiating) from his neck."
