The Nationals trail the Padres 2-1 here at Petco Park, but Ryan Zimmerman put them on the board early with a homer off Jon Garland, the 100th of his career. ZImmerman took the ball over the fence in right-center; for a guy that had just two extra-base hits in his last 14 games, it was a good sign. And then Zimmerman did it again a moment ago, hitting an absolute rocket off Garland to left for his second homer of the day, tying the game at two.
It's a good thing for the Nationals, too, because most of their offense is struggling against Jon Garland. Adam Dunn is 2-for-3, but Nyjer Morgan is the only other player with a hit.
Livan Hernandez has thrown 79 pitches and given up six hits through five innings. But he's probably good to go another couple innings, so the Nationals can get their top relievers set to go if they get a lead.
