Having drafted 17-year-old Bryce Harper to start the draft, the Nationals opened the second round with a pick much closer to their normal m.o.: They took University of San Diego left-hander Sammy Solis to start the second round.
Solis has missed time at San Diego with back issues, and scouting reports don't have him reaching a terribly high ceiling. But he throws three pitches, including a good fastball, and is 6-foot-5. He's also seen as being a relatively quick riser, and could be a solid middle-of-the-rotation starter.
It's a pick that's very much in the Nationals' wheelhouse, and it adds another college pitcher to their ranks to start Day 2 of the draft.
