J.D. Martin did his part today; he threw six one-run innings for the Nationals against the White Sox. And despite a few communication issues in the outfield on pop-ups, the Nationals have mostly played solid defense behind him.
But they cannot hit. And that's why Martin is out of the game after six innings without a shot at a win.
The Nationals have just three hits on Chicago starter Jake Peavy, and worse, they've only made him throw 65 pitches through six innings. He breezed through the sixth on eight pitches, getting a couple quick outs before striking out Ryan Zimmerman looking.
Washington's top two hitters - Nyjer Morgan and Cristian Guzman - have two of the team's three hits, but both of those came in the first inning. And the Nationals, again, haven't been able to draw a walk.
