A Doug Slaten roster move, or red herring?

I saw some odd news on CBS Sports' fantasy baseball site this morning, claiming the Nationals had designated Doug Slaten for assignment.

The left-hander has performed well, compiling a 2.79 ERA and a 1.293 WHIP in 24 appearances. Those sites usually get their news from team press releases or roster moves, so unless the Nationals are playing coy here, something seems off.

When asked if the Nationals had DFAed Slaten, a Nationals spokesman said in an e-mail, "Not that I know of." And as of this morning, Slaten is still listed on the team's active roster. Stay tuned.

Update (12:32 p.m.): Another Nationals spokesperson has chimed in, cleverly saying the story was "just a fantasy." In an e-mail, he added "there's no truth to it."
