Got an e-mail a few minutes ago from the Nationals about a couple of first-year players on their Dominican Summer League team heading to the DSL All-Star Game.
Right-handed starter Wirkin Esteves, who is 4-3 with a 2.01 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 44 2/3 innings, made the team, as did third baseman Jean Valdez. He's hitting .245 with two homers and 19 RBI, but has a .345 on-base percentage.
Fausto Severino, one of the Nationals' scouts in the Dominican Republic, said third baseman Bienvenido Valdez was under consideration to make the team, but was left out because of roster limitations. He's hitting .270 with a .373 on-base percentage, a homer and 13 RBI.
Carlos Alvarez -- who you might remember from last year -- is hitting .348 for the DSL team, with a .479 on-base percentage.
