We're in the top of the third at Nationals Park, and already, the Nationals have a 3-2 lead on the Padres. That's thanks in no small part to Padres lefty Clayton Richard, who has already walked four batters, two of which scored in the first inning.
He got behind Josh Willingham 3-0 with the bases loaded in the second inning, but Willingham swung at the next three pitches, popping up to center to end the inning. Willingham teed off on the 3-0 pitch, hooking it just foul to left, and the next two pitches were in the zone, so you can't fault him too much for swinging there. Credit Richard, instead, for making good pitches on a night where he hasn't made too many so far.
Livan Hernandez has thrown 48 pitches already, and the Padres are threatening to take the lead back in the third. But the Nationals look like they'll get plenty of chances on Richard.
