The Nationals and Reds finish their four-game series in Cincinnati this afternoon, with a 12:35 start at Great American Ballpark. The Nationals will get their first, and only, look this season at Reds right-hander Edinson Volquez, who has returned from Tommy John surgery - and a 50-game suspension for using performance-enhancing substances.
The former All-Star has pitched one game this season, allowing one run in six innings. The Nationals have two players - Roger Bernadina and Michael Morse - with OPSes better than 1.000. Bernadina has a 1.334 OPS, and Morse has a 1.417. But neither player has faced Volquez more than once.
Against Livan Hernandez, Brandon Phillips (1.100 OPS in 11 career plate appearances) and Jonny Gomes (1.681 in 9) have the best numbers. Orlando Cabrera (.959 OPS in 36 career plate appearances) has also hit Hernandez well over the years, but is 3-for-12 against him since 2008. Drew Stubbs went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks earlier this year, but that was his only game against Hernandez.
