Stephen Strasburg will have Tommy John surgery on Friday in Los Angeles after getting a second opinion on his right elbow from Dr. Lewis Yocum, general manager Mike Rizzo told reporters in Florida.
Strasburg will rehab in San Diego before reporting to spring training in Viera, Fla. According to the reports, Strasburg tested surprisingly well on physical examinations, but a second MRI arthrogram confirmed the tear in his ulnar collateral ligament.
It's no surprise that Strasburg will push ahead with surgery; the Nationals want to get him going with rehab as quickly as possible.
If there's any positive news to be taken from the examination, it's that Strasburg is still feeling strong and flexible, which should give him an advantage in his rehab process.
