Nationals calling up three

The Nationals will recall catcher Wilson Ramos and reliever Collin Balester from Triple-A Syracuse today, and select the contract of shortstop Danny Espinosa, starting the September call-up process with those three players, according to a team spokesman.

Ramos, seen as the team's catcher of the future, was expected to be in the majors in September when the Nationals acquired him from the Twins at the end of July. He hit .316 in 20 games at Syracuse, and was called up for one game last month when Wil Nieves went on family leave.

I wrote a story about Espinosa being called up this morning. He's seen as the Nationals' possible second baseman of the future, and hit 22 homers in the minors this year.

And Balester has been in the majors twice this year as a reliever already. He'll give the Nationals extra inventory in their bullpen the rest of the season. According to a team spokesman, he'll actually join the Nationals later in the week, with Ramos and Espinosa joining them today.
