The Nationals were able to close the gap to within one run during the bottom of the fifth inning at Nationals Park. The Marlins still lead 6-5, but starter Chris Volstad exited after 4.2 innings. As always, he threw a steady diet of sinkers but the Nationals managed to collect eight hits off of him today. The fifth inning rally included hits by Ryan Zimmerman and Roger Bernadina, as well as walks by Adam Dunn and Michael Morse.
A win today would have made him the first Marlin to ever win five times against the same opponent in a single season.
Also, catcher Ivan Rodriguez made a strange play in the top of the fifth. With Mike Stanton caught somewhere between first and second base, Rodriguez ran out from home plate to make the tag. It was scored a CS-2 unassisted. If you missed it, you'll want to check the highlights later. You never know what you're going to see at the ballpark!
