Harper joins Arizona Fall League team today

After taking the weekend to celebrate his 18th birthday with family and friends in Las Vegas, Bryce Harper will join the Scottsdale Scorpions today, starting his stint in the Arizona Fall League with seven other Nationals prospects.

Harper will likely play his first game on Wednesday night, when the Scorpions take on the Mesa Solar Sox at 6:30 p.m. local time (9:30 p.m. Eastern time).

Harper is on the Scorpions' taxi squad, which means he's eligible to play games on Wednesdays and Saturdays while working out the rest of the week.

The No. 1 overall pick in the June draft, whom the Nationals project as a right fielder, will likely see some time there in the AFL, though he could wind up DHing at times, as manager Randy Knorr (the Nationals' Double-A Harrisburg manager) has to spread playing time around with prospects from other teams on his roster.

General manager Mike Rizzo has said Harper will start next season in Single-A ball, which likely means he'll begin the year at Single-A Hagerstown.
