I was alerted to this glorious piece of information tonight by my good buddy Dave Campbell, who covers the Twins and other sports for the AP in Minneapolis. Apparently, Twins right-hander Carl Pavano - who's a free agent this winter and has drawn some interest from the Nationals - is a finalist for something called the 2010 Robert Goulet Memorial Mustached American of the Year Award.
Pavano, whose mustache became such a hit in Minnesota that the Twins gave away stick-on imitations of it at Target Field this year, is competing with sportscaster Pat O'Brien, former Phoenix Suns point guard Kevin Johnson, Chicago Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville, maligned umpire Jim Joyce and North Dakota Governor John Hoeven, among others.
The "Goulet" is awarded annually by the American Mustache Institute. If you'd like to join AMI (and I know you would), you can fill out an application here. The third annual award will be announced at the 'Stache Bash in St. Louis on Dec. 4.
Our younger readers might be asking, "Who is Robert Goulet?" Here's one of my favorite projects from the late, legendary crooner -- thecollege basketball commercialshe did for ESPN in the 1990s. And of course, here's Will Ferrell's legendary send-up of Goulet on SNL.
