The Nationals announced this afternoon they have signed former Orioles and Padres right-hander Cla Meredith to a minor-league deal with an invite to major league spring training. They also officially announced the minor league contract for Alex Cora, with whom they'd agreed to a deal last month.
Meredith, of course, pitched the last year and a half with the Orioles after spending three and a half seasons with the Padres. The sidearm-throwing reliever had some success in Baltimore, posting a 3.77 ERA for them in 2009, but was part of the Orioles bullpen that imploded and blew handfuls of games early last season. He had a 5.40 ERA in 21 games last year.
It's unlikely that Meredith would make the Nationals' roster out of spring training, but he gives them another arm for their bullpen inventory.
