VIERA, Fla. - The Nationals will have to wait at least another day to see their new first baseman play in the field. Adam LaRoche will be the team's designated hitter today, staying away from defense today because of some shoulder soreness.
Manager Jim Riggleman said LaRoche just has "spring training soreness" in his shoulder from throwing in drills, and will DH for a couple days.
"He wants to play first base," Riggleman said. "(Trainer) Lee Kuntz and I made the decision to hold off."
The injury gives the Nationals a chance to see Chris Marrero in the field; defense has been the 2006 first-round pick's biggest issue in the minors, but he's continued to make progress, and he'll get a shot to show it today.
