VIERA, Fla. - Little by little, Tom Gorzelanny appears to be rounding into form for the regular season. He's started tonight's game with the Cardinals by throwing three scoreless innings, striking out three batters.
The left-hander threw a nice-looking slider that caught the outside corner and froze Ryan Theriot to start the game, and ended both the first and third innings with strikeouts. He's also gotten three early groundouts, including one ball hit to Ryan Zimmerman in his first game back from a groin strain that kept him out for 11 days. Zimmerman handled it easily, and made a clean overhand throw to first.
In his first at-bat, Zimmerman hit a pitch on the outer half of the plate to first for a groundout. Manager Jim Riggleman said before the game he'd encouraged Zimmerman to run ground balls out at 80 percent of his full speed, but the third baseman doesn't seem to have any ill effects of his injury so far.
The Nationals and Cardinals are scoreless in the third; Washington's only hit came on a single to right from Alex Cora.
