Nationals trail after Mock rocked

JUPITER, Fla. - We're (only) in the bottom of the fifth at Roger Dean Stadium, and the Nationals trail 5-2 after an interminable inning from Garrett Mock. Well, it wasn't even a full inning; he was gone after 2/3 of an inning. His defense didn't help him - Danny Espinosa made an error, and Michael Morse missed a chance to throw out a runner at home when he made a bad throw after fielding a grounder at first. But Mock looked as inconsistent as ever in his first spring appearance.

He walked three batters, threw a wild pitch and gave up two hits. Only one of the five runs he allowed was earned, but nobody forced him to walk those batters, including the bases-loaded walk he issued to Albert Pujols.

Mock is competing for a spot in the rotation, but he'll be 28 this year, and seems to be about out of chances in Washington.

Bryce Harper just entered the game for the Nationals, taking over for Jayson Werth in right field. Werth ended the fifth, so Harper won't be up for a while, but he'll get at least one at-bat today.
