VIERA, Fla. - Jordan Zimmermann's unscored-upon spring has ended.
The Cardinals just took a 1-0 lead against the right-hander, who had not yielded a run over 11 innings in his first three appearances But they had to get some fortuitous bounces to do so.
Jon Jay led off the game with a bad-hop single over second baseman Brian Bixler's glove, a ball that Bixler was prepared to field before it leaped over his head. Jay went to second on a Zimmermann wild pitch, but held on a bunt by Ryan Theriot. Matt Carpenter then ripped a grounder down the first base line that eluded the dive of Adam LaRoche for an RBI double.
Ian Desmond's high throw on an attempt to nab Carpenter at third on Matt Holliday's grounder extended the inning, putting runners at the corners. But Zimmermann got Mark Hamilton to ground into a 6-4-3 double play.
Zimmermann's ERA is at 0.75.
UPDATE: The Nats have taken a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first on Desmond's double, an RBI double by Jayson Werth, an error by Jay that moved Werth to third and LaRoche's run-scoring single.
