Anyway, Laynce Nix got a start in left field last night, with manager Jim Riggleman wanting to stack a lineup of left-handed hitters against Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum. And the decision to start Nix was his best of the night; the 30-year-old went 2-for-3 with a two-run homer that almost went into the second deck in right field. He also threw out Cody Ross at second trying to stretch a single into a double, and hit a foul ball off the facing of the third deck; there was an audible gasp from the crowd as Nix tore into the pitch, and asked afterward if he'd ever hit a ball that hard, Nix quickly said, "No." Several Nationals players said the same thing when asked if they'd ever seen one hit that far.
(That little anecdote is for one Twitter reader who made it clear he's tired of hearing about the foul. I was going to use it this morning anyway, but now that I know how much the people want it, it's a must!)
Nix is now 8-for-20 as a starter; as the Washington Post's Adam Kilgore tweeted last night, he's quickly becoming this year's version of Michael Morse. But there is a case to be made for giving Nix some playing time, particularly when Rick Ankiel has a .571 OPS in center field. The Nationals would lose something in center without Ankiel's pistol of an arm, but the team feels like Nix can play all three outfield positions.
And he's actually played more games in center field in his career than any other spot. He's only had a negative UZR there twice (-0.1 in 2007 and -1.4 in 2009). On an occasional basis, he might provide some help there.
So what do you think? Would you like to see more of Nix - and if so, would you prefer to see him in center or left, where this year's version of Michael Morse could platoon with Michael Morse?
