The start of the game may have been delayed, but the Nationals' offense remained hot.
Washington got off to a fast start against St. Louis starter Jake Westbrook, scoring one run in the first inning on an Adam LaRoche groundout. The offense really exploded in the third inning.
Led by second baseman Danny Espinosa, the Nats scored six times before Westbrook retired pitcher John Lannan to end the inning.
One of those runs came on a steal of home by shortstop Ian Desmond, the first steal of home since the Nationals moved to Washington. On that play, left fielder Laynce Nix stole second. The scoring was capped with an Ivan Rodriguez double to center field.
The only blemishes on Lannan are a pair of solo shots surrendered to Albert Pujols and Colby Rasmus. The Nationals lead, 7-2.
