The Nationals had set aside May 2 for Military Appreciation Night since the beginning of the season, where active or retired servicemen and servicewomen can get four free tickets to tonight's game with a valid military ID.
But the backdrop that sets it up should make for a memorable scene at Nationals Park tonight.
The news late last night that U.S. forces had killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan set off spontaneous celebrations at Ground Zero in New York and in front of the White House in Washington. It's one of those where-were-you-when-you-found-out moments, and though the effort to find the al-Qaeda leader predated 9/11, the two cities most affected by the tragedy that day were the ones leading the celebration last night.
And tonight's game against the Giants, which is set up as a thank-you to the country's armed forces, should be especially poignant.
Kristen Hudak has all the details on how military families can get tickets for tonight's game here.
