The Nationals acquired outfielder Gregor Blanco from the Royals today for a player to be named. Blanco was assigned to Triple-A Syracuse, and will not be added to the Nationals' 40-man roster.
Blanco is only 27, but he's logged 836 plate appearances in the majors as a pinch hitter and backup outfielder with the Braves and Royals. In an odd twist, he was traded for current Nationals center fielder Rick Ankiel last year.
He was hitting .196 at Triple-A Omaha this year, but had a .384 on-base percentage. Blanco could provide some value to the Nationals at some point as a reserve outfielder.
