Nationals' statement on the passing of Davey Johnson's stepson

PHILADELPHIA - Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo just released a statement on senior advisor to the GM Davey Johnson's stepson, Jake Allen, who died on Tuesday of infection and pneumonia:

"On behalf of the Washington Nationals organization, it is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Michael Jacob 'Jake' Allen, 34, the stepson of Davey Johnson and son of Susan Johnson. Jake passed away yesterday, May 3, 2011, at Florida Hospital in Orlando, from infection and pneumonia. His parents and siblings were at his side.

"Though hearing and visually impaired since birth, it is Jake's fighting spirit for which he shall be remembered.

"Anyone who knows of Davey and Susan's limitless devotion to Jake, and the positive energy they brought to his life, cannot help but stand humbled. Their enormous impact on programs and services for the disabled community reflects not only their love for Jake, but also a deep sense of compassion and responsibility."

In lieu of flowers, the Johnson family requests that contributions be made, in Jake's memory, to Lighthouse Central Florida in Orlando. A memorial service honoring Jake Allen will take place at Florida Hospital Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Orlando on Friday, May 6 at 10:30 a.m.
