Orioles take lead on Nationals in 7th

BALTIMORE - The Nationals have missed chances all day, either seeing balls come just short of leaving the park or failing to come through with men on base. And after a superb outing by Jordan Zimmermann, the Nationals' thin margin for error is gone.

Zimmermann allowed a leadoff single to Nick Markakis, and Vladimir Guerrero smoked for an 0-2 curveball that was left over the middle of the plate, hitting it to left field for a two-run homer that gave Baltimore a 2-1 lead.

The Nationals still have some time to come back on the Orioles' shaky bullpen, but they also had a shot to open up a big lead on Baltimore. Though Roger Bernadina's two shots came inches from leaving the park, the Nationals have left nine men on base, and are 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position today. It's been just as much about a lack of execution as bad luck, and Zimmermann is on the hook for the loss at the moment because of it.
