So far, so good at the top

Roger Bernadina's trial as the Nationals' new leadoff hitter is going quite well, though two at-bats is an admittedly small sample size.

Bernadina, called up from Triple-A Syracuse today to replace the injured Rick Ankiel on the roster and in center field, led off the game with a single and scored the Nats' first run on Adam LaRoche's two-run, bases-loaded single.

In the second, Bernadina had a two-out single and stole second, but was stranded.

Manager Jim Riggleman has indicated that Bernadina will get the lion's share of the time in the leadoff spot while Ankiel is sidelined by a right wrist sprain. Coming into tonight's game, Bernadina was 13-for-66 (.197) in 16 career games as a leadoff man.

We're heading to the third after lefty Tom Gorzelanny, facing the Marlins for the first time since May 14, 2007 for the Pirates, has just served up a game-tying two-run homer to John Buck.
