SAN FRANCISCO - Anthony Rendon, who just talked to Washington media for the first time a few minutes ago, said he only had a "mild strain" in his right shoulder last season, and will not need surgery.
Rendon was mostly limited to DHing during his junior season at Rice, and caused a bit of a stir before the draft when several teams said he needed to release his medical records. But Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said yesterday he was comfortable with the work the team's medical staff had done in examining Rendon's shoulder, and Rendon said he would be fine with a little rest this summer.
He also said he was fine playing anywhere on the diamond, adding he'd played second base in high school when he was only 5-foot-4 and 120 lbs. That's the smart thing to say, with Ryan Zimmerman signed for another two years, but things can shake out in a number of different directions. I'll have more on where Rendon might fit in a little while.
