Rizzo: John McLaren will manage Nationals in Chicago

John McLaren, who became the Nationals' bench coach before last season on Jim Riggleman's staff, will succeed his close friend as Nationals manager.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo told MASN's Debbi Taylor that McLaren will take over as the interim manager, replacing Riggleman after his resignation following the Nationals' win over the Mariners on Thursday. The Nationals, who open a weekend interleague series against the White Sox in Chicago on Friday, will continue to look for a manager for the rest of the season.

In an odd twist, Riggleman was McLaren's bench coach in 2008, taking over for him as the Mariners' interim manager after McLaren was fired.

McLaren went 43-41 with the Mariners in 2007, and was fired by the Mariners 72 games into the 2008 season.

All of the Nationals' coaches are also in Chicago with the team, so the Nationals are trying to keep things as stable as possible for now.
