SAN DIEGO - Good morning from Petco Park - well, it's morning here at least, as the Nationals get ready for their series finale with the Padres at 4:05 p.m. Eastern time (1:05 local time). A couple notes from the Nationals' clubhouse.
* Ian Desmond is sitting out with the sore left quadriceps muscle he first injured running to first back on May 13 against the Marlins. Desmond has been playing with it all season, but with a long flight tonight and a day off tomorrow, manager Jim Riggleman gave him the day off so he can essentially rest for two days before the Nationals start their next home series against the Cardinals. Desmond said the injury hasn't gotten better, but he's still able to play with it.
* Assuming his son, Ivan Dereck Rodriguez, signs with the Twins, Ivan Rodriguez is planning to go to Puerto Rico and play winter ball with his son. The catcher last played winter ball three years ago. He's also hoping to stretch his career long enough that he can play with his son in the majors. "Believe me when I tell you I can," Rodriguez said.
* Several Nationals players, when the subject of league realignment was broached, were open to the idea. Desmond was concerned about the possibility of longer road trips if an unbalanced schedule was no longer in play, but in general, players seemed to like the idea of something different.
