Right-hander Jason Marquis lasted only 1 1/3 innings - his shortest outing in 17 starts this season - and the Nationals were not able to dig out of a deep hole in a 10-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday afternoon.
Marquis (7-3) yielded seven runs - six earned - on eight hits, throwing only 42 pitches before being replaced by Collin Balester with the Nationals behind 6-0.
The loss meant a split of the four-game weekend series with the Pirates and dropped the Nationals to 42-43. Washington is 2-5 since Davey Johnson took over as manager Monday in Anaheim.
