Gomes has hit 20 homers in a season three times, and he'd give the Nationals another right-handed bat, but this doesn't seem like the kind of move that fits in the Nationals' long-term plans. Gomes is 30, only plays the corner outfield spots and is defensively limited (he has a career UZR of 15.6 runs below replacement). He could be inventory in case of another move, or he could also be headed out in another trade.
General manager Mike Rizzo is scheduled to talk with reporters sometime during the game, so I'll have more at that point. I'll also be live chatting for the first part of the game, so you can ask your questions about the trade here.
