The Nationals were down to their last strike a minute ago, staring at another loss to the Phillies with Nationals Park once again stuffed full of Philadelphia fans.
And then Ian Desmond hit what might have been the biggest homer of his short career.
The shortstop hit a 1-2 pitch from Antonio Bastardo on a line to left field, pulling the Nationals even with the Phillies at four runs apiece. It came after he had ducked out of the way of the previous pitch, instead of letting it hit him and put him on base. But in a stretch where seven of 11 Nationals batters struck out, it turned out Desmond was the only one who did anything to bring the Nationals back.
We'll head to the 10th inning of this interminable game with Sean Burnett on the mound.
