The Nationals (57-62) got the best of the Phillies (78-41) Friday night, but tonight was a different story. Philadelphia beat the Nationals 11-3 as Washington kicked the ball around on defense, leading to seven unearned runs for the pitching staff.
John Lannan (8-8) did his best to keep the Nats in the game, but unraveled in a third inning that started with an Ian Desmond error. Desmond's error opened up the floodgates for the Philadelphia offense. Lannan allowed five runs in the decisive third, putting the Nationals in a 7-2 hole.
For Philadelphia, Roy Oswalt (5-7) went seven innings, allowing the Nats' offense to muster just three runs. Michael Morse, Ryan Zimmerman and Desmond knocked in the runs for Washington, but their offense couldn't overcome their defense.
The Nationals and Phillies meet for the rubber match of the series Sunday at 1:35 p.m. when Chien-Ming Wang (1-2) squares off with Roy Halladay (15-4).
