The Nationals struggled to solve Giants right-hander Matt Cain Saturday in the 7-1 setback. It was the second start in a row that the three-time All-Star had the Nationals' number.
In their first meeting in San Francisco last week, Cain tossed five no-hit innings against the Nats in a 3-1 victory.
Saturday, Cain held the Nationals scoreless while pitching five innings again, this time allowing five hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
The Nationals had chances to score runs in both...
CHICAGO - Sure, the Orioles had a replay call overturned tonight and it cost them a run, but once again their offense didn't produce much and that was the bigger issue in a 4-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox. A night after scoring seven runs on 16 hits they were held to six hits by Carlos Rodon and three relievers.
The White Sox evened the series at a win each, but with Toronto's loss to Kansas City, the Orioles (62-47) remain in a first-place tie atop the American League East.

Stephen Strasburg was done in by the Giants lineup and possibly the D.C. humidity. Bryce Harper might have been done in by something else, appearing to tweak something on a swing and departing tonight's game after six innings.
Needless to say, the Nationals' 7-1 loss to San Francisco did not go how anyone in the home dugout would have liked.
Strasburg was roughed up during his shortest start of the season (4 2/3 innings) and suffered only his second loss in 21 outings.
Harper, meanwhile, came...
If anyone wants a veteran left-handed reliever, the Padres designated 39-year-old Matt Thornton for assignment yesterday afternoon.
I'm wondering if the Orioles would have interest, considering that he held left-handed hitters to a .198 average last season with the Nationals and posted a 2.18 ERA in 60 appearances.
Thornton registered a combined 1.75 ERA in 64 appearances with the Yankees and Nationals in 2014. Left-handers hit .235 off him in 2013, but right-handers hit .333.
Left-handers...
CHICAGO - In search of his 15th win tonight, Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman gave up single runs in the first and third innings as the White Sox took an early lead in Game 2 of this three-game series.
White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson smoked a double to lead off the home half of the first inning and then Melky Cabrera, batting second, doubled him in for a 1-0 lead. Tillman stranded Cabrera at second, but needed 25 pitches in the first.
After he retired Chicago 1-2-3 on just six pitches in the...
Brian Goodwin always expected he'd get the call. He just didn't expect it to come when it did, late Saturday night, when the Nationals informed the 25-year-old outfielder he was getting promoted to the big leagues for the first time.
"I just kind of blacked out once I heard it," he said. "I was just excited. Everything I ever dreamed of, everything I worked for. Just to get that news, it was unreal."
Ryan Zimmerman's latest trip to the disabled list led to Goodwin's first trip to the...
CHICAGO - With back-to-back road wins - the last game in Toronto and first game in Chicago - the Orioles look for three in a row tonight against the White Sox.
They won 7-5 last night as five players had multi-hit games and Pedro Alvarez homered twice. The Orioles had 16 hits - their most since 17 on June 28 at San Diego. Their seven runs was the most since July 29 when they scored 12 at San Diego.
The O's pinned a loss on former Oriole Miguel Gonzalez last night as Yovani Gallardo picked up...
The Orioles have set their rotation for the Oakland series that begins Monday at O.co Coliseum.
Kevin Gausman will start the opener of the four-game series, followed by Wade Miley on Tuesday, Yovani Gallardo on Wednesday and Chris Tillman on Thursday.
The Athletics are listing only Kendall Graveman for Monday and Sonny Gray for Thursday. The other two spots are TBD. Gray, though, left today's game with forearm soreness, putting his scheduled start against the Orioles in doubt.
Pedro Alvarez is...
CHICAGO - He has hit five homers over his last three games, going 7-for-12, and hit two homers last night, but Pedro Alvarez is not in tonight's starting lineup for the Orioles against White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodon.
O's manager Buck Showalter is not always fond of lineup questions, but he got one today. Why is Alvarez, who has been so hot, not starting?
"Why he has been hot?" Showalter asked. "Because he's facing right-handed pitching. I like having a nice weapon on the bench, too....
Seven times in the last six years Ryan Zimmerman has had to take these questions from reporters, seven times explaining why an injury was forcing him to the disabled list and seven times trying not to get frustrated by the situation.
As he went through the process again today, after landing back on the DL with a left wrist contusion, Zimmerman admitted it's starting to get to him more than it has in the past.
"Yeah, it's really frustrating," the 31-year-old first baseman said. "I think...
