The Washington Nationals relieved pitching coach Derek Lilliquist of his duties and named Paul Menhart pitching coach on Thursday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.
Menhart joins the Major League club after serving as the organization’s Minor League pitching coordinator since 2015. The 2019 season marks his 14th season in the Nationals organization. Menhart progressed through Washington’s Minor League system beginning in 2006. During his tenure, he has influenced the development and has had consistent exposure to nearly every pitcher in Washington’s organization.
Menhart joined the organization from Western Carolina University where he spent three years (2003-05) as their pitching coach. He was selected in the eighth round of the 1990 First-Year Player Draft out of Western Carolina. He appeared in 41 games across three Major League seasons with San Diego (1997), Seattle (1996) and Toronto (1995).
