Game 94 lineups: Nats vs. Dodgers

It may not garner as much attention as Lucas Giolito’s major league debut a couple of weeks ago, but Reynaldo Lopez’s first career start tonight for the Nationals is nearly as significant a development.

The 22-year-old right-hander is one of the organization’s top pitching prospects and has rocketed his up the farm system in the last year, going from Single-A Potomac to Double-A Harrisburg and then briefly to Triple-A Syracuse before earning this final promotion. Lopez also is the first pitcher the Nationals have signed out of the Dominican Republic and developed on their own to reach the big leagues. That’s no small achievement for a franchise that for too long has lagged in its Latin American development program.

Lopez’s arrival coincides with the placement of reliever Sammy Solis on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation. The club also saw Double-A right-hander Abel De Los Santos get claimed off waivers by the Reds, which opened up the spot on the 40-man roster necessary for Lopez’s addition.

Daniel Murphy is back in the lineup for the Nationals, but he’s playing third base for the first time this season. That’s because Anthony Rendon is still battling the flu, which knocked him out of Sunday’s game. Something may also be going on with Stephen Drew that would prevent him from playing third base, but Dusty Baker said he couldn’t share any details until after the game tonight...
